GRIDCo Schedules 15-Hour Power Interruption in Parts of Greater Accra
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a 15-hour interruption in electricity supply to parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

The planned interruption, scheduled from 3:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., is to enable GRIDCo engineers and technical teams to continue work on the replacement of a damaged transmission tower at Ashaiman. The affected tower is located along the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line. GRIDCo said the structure was damaged following a tanker explosion in the area, necessitating emergency repair works to restore the integrity and reliability of the transmission network.

The company previously carried out an initial phase of repair works on August 16. However, the tower replacement was not fully completed during that exercise, prompting the need for additional work on August 23. The planned shutdown will affect customers within parts of the Accra East and Accra West operational areas of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Communities listed among the affected areas include James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, parts of Kaneshie, North Industrial Area, Okaishie, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, Adabraka, parts of Ridge, Tesano, Santana Market, parts of Alajo, Malam Atta Market and Asylum Down.

In the Accra East area, affected locations include Nima Township, Kanda Highway, Kanda Estate, Kokomlemle, Circle, Madina Township, Okponglo, Cantonment, Osu Oxford Street and surrounding communities. GRIDCo said the interruption is necessary to allow the replacement work to be undertaken safely and to ensure the long-term stability of the transmission line. The company is collaborating with ECG to make the necessary arrangements to minimise the impact of the interruption on customers and communities within the affected areas.

GRIDCo has appealed to residents and electricity consumers in the affected communities for their patience and cooperation while the technical teams complete the work. The company has also apologised for the inconvenience the temporary interruption may cause, stressing that the exercise is part of efforts to restore the full integrity, reliability and resilience of the transmission network. The latest announcement comes days after Ghana experienced a separate widespread power outage following a system disturbance on August 20. GRIDCo subsequently confirmed that electricity supply had been restored to all affected areas.
