UTAG Sets June 30 Ultimatum for Government Over Conditions of Service, Warns of Nationwide Strike

The warning was contained in a statement released after the Association's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho. UTAG expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as persistent delays in addressing critical issues affecting lecturers and academic staff across public universities.

Among the key concerns raised is the government's failure to sign and implement the Interim Salary Adjustment Agreement, despite negotiations reportedly being concluded. UTAG argues that the agreement is intended to provide temporary financial relief to lecturers while awaiting a comprehensive salary review expected to take effect in 2027.

The Association also highlighted delays in the approval and regularisation of post-retirement contract renewals, unresolved payroll placement challenges, unpaid promotion arrears, and outstanding allowances owed to staff in several public universities.

Additionally, UTAG cited delays in the processing and payment of the 2026 Book and Research Allowance, describing the situation as a source of growing frustration among members who rely on the support to advance research and academic work.

According to the Association, the continued failure to address these concerns is eroding confidence in the collective bargaining process and negatively affecting the welfare of university lecturers nationwide.

UTAG is therefore calling on the government to immediately implement the Interim Salary Adjustment Agreement, settle all outstanding arrears and allowances, resolve payroll-related challenges, and expedite the payment of the Book and Research Allowance before the June 30 deadline.

The Association warned that should the government fail to act, its branches across the country will begin consultations within five working days to secure mandates for industrial action in accordance with labour regulations and the Association's constitution.

While reiterating its commitment to dialogue, UTAG urged the government to demonstrate good faith by honouring existing agreements and addressing the concerns without further delay.

The looming strike threat raises concerns about potential disruptions to academic activities in public universities, especially as institutions prepare for upcoming academic programmes and examinations.
