His caution comes as torrential rains triggered widespread flooding across several parts of Greater Accra, leaving roads submerged, businesses disrupted and a number of filling stations surrounded by floodwaters.

According to Mr. Tieku, motorists should only refuel when absolutely necessary during the ongoing floods and should ensure they buy fuel from stations that have not been inundated. He explained that although modern fuel stations are built with protective measures, severe flooding can compromise operations and requires thorough inspections before normal service resumes.

He stressed that stations affected by floodwaters must undergo safety and quality checks to confirm that fuel storage tanks, dispensing systems and electrical installations have not been compromised.

"We encourage motorists to prioritise their safety. If a filling station has been affected by floodwaters, avoid purchasing fuel there until the station has been inspected and cleared for normal operations," he advised.

The Star Oil CEO also urged motorists to avoid driving through flooded forecourts, noting that hidden hazards, damaged electrical equipment and contaminated water could present additional dangers.

His appeal comes as emergency agencies continue responding to the flooding, which has affected communities including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Alajo, Achimota, Odaw, Tema, Tse Addo and other parts of the Greater Accra Region. Rescue operations are ongoing in several locations while authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage.

Industry experts note that petroleum storage systems are designed with multiple layers of protection against water intrusion. However, after significant flooding, operators typically conduct inspections and quality assurance tests before dispensing fuel to customers.

Mr. Tieku further encouraged motorists to monitor official updates from fuel retailers and emergency authorities and to avoid unnecessary travel until floodwaters recede.

The warning forms part of broader public safety advisories issued as Ghana experiences one of its heaviest rainfall events of the season, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and follow emergency guidance.
