<p>According to diplomatic sources, President Ramaphosa had been expected to visit Ghana from August 2 to 4 as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. However, Ghana is said to have informed Pretoria that the visit would not proceed until concrete measures are taken to guarantee the safety of Ghanaian citizens living in South Africa.</p><p>The decision follows weeks of renewed anti-foreigner violence, which has reportedly forced the repatriation of about 1,000 Ghanaians, while hundreds more have registered to return home. Ghana has also strongly condemned the killing of a Ghanaian national, Bashiru Isak, during the unrest and has formally protested to the South African government over the incident.</p><p>Government sources indicated that aside from concerns over the welfare of Ghanaians in South Africa, there were also fears that the current tensions could pose security risks during any official visit by President Ramaphosa.</p><p>South African authorities, however, have disputed parts of Ghana's account of the violence. Pretoria insists there is no evidence that the killing was directly linked to xenophobic demonstrations and has rejected claims that the country is experiencing widespread xenophobic attacks, describing some circulating reports and videos as misleading.</p><p>The latest development has strained relations between the two countries, despite their long-standing diplomatic and economic ties. Ghana maintains that the protection of its citizens abroad remains a priority and has called on South African authorities to take decisive action against violence targeting foreign nationals before high-level diplomatic engagements resume.</p>
