No Evacuee Wanted by South African Authorities; Majority Hold Valid Documents -Ablakwa
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed reports suggesting that Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa are illegal migrants or individuals wanted by law enforcement authorities.
<div>Speaking in an interview with 1957 News, the Minister clarified that the ongoing evacuation exercise is being conducted in close collaboration with South African security and immigration authorities, who are actively involved in the screening and verification process.</div><div><br></div><div>According to him, every Ghanaian approved for evacuation undergoes thorough checks before being cleared to return home.</div><div>“There is no single Ghanaian who has been screened and approved for evacuation who has been identified as wanted for any criminal offence or breach of the law,” he stated.</div><div><br></div><div>Mr Ablakwa described circulating reports linking the evacuation exercise to criminality and illegal migration as misleading and inaccurate. He stressed that the majority of registered applicants are legal migrants who possess valid immigration documents and have been residing in South Africa through legitimate means.</div><div><br></div><div>He therefore urged the public to disregard claims portraying the evacuees as undocumented migrants, emphasizing that the exercise is a humanitarian response aimed at protecting Ghanaian citizens who feel threatened by the current security situation.</div><div><br></div><div>“The facts do not support the narrative being circulated. Most of these individuals are law-abiding residents who have contributed positively to the South African economy,” he added.</div><div> </div><div>Photo credits: Modern Ghana </div>
