Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena Installed as Kristo Asafo Leader Amid Succession Dispute and Security Concerns

Accra, June 22, 2026 — Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I has officially been installed as the new leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, succeeding his late father, Apostle Professor Emeritus Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, despite an ongoing legal challenge over the succession process and a shooting incident that overshadowed the ceremony.

The installation ceremony took place on Sunday, June 21, at the residence of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, where church elders and followers formally swore him into office as head of the religious movement founded by his late father.

Videos and photographs circulating on social media, as well as announcements made by the Kristo Asafo Mission, showed the new leader receiving the traditional symbols of authority and taking the oath of office before supporters.

The ceremony, however, occurred against the backdrop of a growing succession dispute that has divided sections of the Kristo Asafo fraternity and members of the Safo family following the death of the church founder in September 2025.

Just days before the installation, two members of the Mission filed an action at the Accra High Court challenging the legitimacy of the succession process. The plaintiffs contend that amendments made to the church's constitution govern the selection of a successor and argue that Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena is not eligible to assume the position under those provisions.

Court documents cited by local media indicate that the plaintiffs are seeking declarations on the interpretation of the church's constitution and an order restraining the installation pending the determination of the case.

Adding to the controversy, the installation ceremony coincided with a shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, who is also a daughter of the late church founder.

Police have since confirmed the arrest of six private security personnel in connection with the incident and have recovered firearms and ammunition from the premises where the ceremony was held. Investigations remain ongoing.

Despite the legal and security concerns, the Kristo Asafo Mission proceeded with the installation and formally announced Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I as the new spiritual and administrative leader of the organisation.

In a message accompanying the announcement, the Mission expressed confidence in his leadership and pledged to uphold the vision and legacy established by Apostle Kwadwo Safo over several decades.

The latest developments mark a significant turning point for one of Ghana's most influential religious and indigenous industrial movements. However, with court proceedings pending and police investigations continuing, questions surrounding the succession process and events surrounding the installation are likely to remain under public scrutiny in the coming weeks.

The Ghana Police Service has not indicated whether the shooting incident will affect any future activities connected to the succession process, while legal proceedings concerning the leadership dispute are expected to continue before the High Court.
