Mahama Orders Demolition of Korle Bu's Ageing Maternity Block
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the demolition of the ageing Gordon-Guggisberg Maternity Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, describing the decades-old facility as a "death trap" that poses a serious danger to mothers, babies and healthcare workers.
<h1><br></h1><p>The President announced the decision on Thursday, July 9, during the commissioning of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra.</p><p>Mr Mahama revealed that government has already begun the procurement process to construct a new state-of-the-art maternity block to replace the deteriorating structure, which has served generations of mothers but has become structurally unsafe.</p><p>"We will pull down the old Gordon-Guggisberg building that has today become a death trap. Every other day, our mothers give birth in that building. It is a death trap that can cause devastation," the President said.</p><p>According to him, improving healthcare goes beyond financing treatment and requires modern facilities capable of delivering safe and quality care. He explained that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as <strong>Mahama Cares</strong>, has expanded its mandate to support the construction of specialist health facilities, procure and maintain medical equipment, and train critical healthcare personnel.</p><p>As part of the broader healthcare reforms, President Mahama also announced Cabinet's approval for the recruitment and training of 500 critical care nurses. He further disclosed plans to establish Ghana Medical Equipment Services Limited to ensure the proper maintenance and replacement of specialised medical equipment in public hospitals.</p><p>The planned demolition and reconstruction of the Korle Bu maternity block form part of government's wider efforts to modernise Ghana's health infrastructure and improve maternal and neonatal healthcare across the country.</p>
