Mahama Declares Two-Day National Cleanup Exercise in Flood-Hit Regions
The Presidency has urged all Ghanaians to participate, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is essential to preventing future flood disasters and protecting lives.
<p>The exercise will focus on desilting choked drains, clearing sand and debris from roads, and cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational areas, and other public spaces. Government has also tasked all MMDAs to provide the necessary logistics and ensure the immediate disposal of collected waste.</p><p>President Mahama has directed all government appointees, including ministers, Members of Parliament, MMDCEs, CEOs of state institutions, and heads of public institutions, to actively lead cleanup activities in their respective communities.</p><p>According to the Presidency, personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the cleanup on Friday, while the general public will join the exercise on Saturday.</p><p>The initiative, organised under the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and themed "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods," aims to improve sanitation, clear blocked drains, and reduce the risk of future flooding following the devastating June 29 floods.</p><p>President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods.</p>
