Mahama Calls for Lasting Solutions After Devastating Accra Floods
ACCRA, Ghana | June 30, 2026 President John Dramani Mahama has called for a new and more effective approach to tackling flooding in Ghana following the devastating rains that inundated several parts of Accra on Sunday.

Speaking after assessing the impact of the floods, the President said the country could no longer afford to witness the same destruction every rainy season, stressing that sustainable solutions must be implemented to protect lives and property.

"This time, we must act differently. Together, we must ensure lasting solutions are implemented, so that this cycle of devastating floods does not continue year after year," the President said.

Mr. Mahama noted that the recurring floods are driven by a combination of heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage systems and human activities, including the construction of buildings on waterways and poor waste disposal practices that block drains.

As part of the government's response, he directed the relevant agencies to intensify the clearing of drains, remove structures obstructing waterways where necessary and accelerate long-term flood control projects across the Greater Accra Region.

The President also commended emergency responders, including personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, for assisting residents affected by the floods.

The heavy downpour left several communities under water, disrupted transportation, damaged homes and businesses, and forced many residents to seek safer ground. Assessment teams remain on the ground to determine the full extent of the destruction.

Government has assured the public that immediate relief efforts will continue while authorities work on permanent measures aimed at preventing future flood disasters.
