Lawyers Question Speed of Abu Trica's Extradition to the United States
Prominent Ghanaian lawyers have raised concerns over the speed with which alleged fraud suspect Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, was extradited to the United States to face criminal charges.

Lawyer and former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has called on the government to explain why the extradition process was carried out so quickly. He questioned whether the Attorney-General's recent visit to the United States had any connection to the timing of the extradition and urged authorities to provide a clear account of the decision.

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has also criticised the government's handling of the matter. He argued that the extradition appeared to have been rushed despite ongoing legal issues and suggested that the state should have allowed all court processes in Ghana to be fully concluded before transferring the suspect to U.S. authorities. According to Kpebu, the circumstances surrounding the extradition deserve closer public scrutiny.

Abu Trica was extradited to the United States last week to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering in connection with an alleged romance scam that U.S. prosecutors say defrauded elderly victims of more than US$8 million. He has since made his initial appearance before a U.S. federal court, where the criminal proceedings against him are expected to continue.

The Government of Ghana has not publicly responded to the concerns raised by the lawyers. Under Ghana's Extradition Act and applicable bilateral arrangements, extradition requests are processed through the courts before being executed by the executive branch.

The case has generated significant public debate, with legal observers divided over whether the state acted within established legal procedures or moved with unusual haste in handing the suspect over to U.S. authorities.
