Kristo Asafo Leader Akofena Arrested as Police Deepen Probe into Adwoa Safo Shooting
Accra, June 23, 2026 — The Ghana Police Service has arrested Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, the newly installed leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission, together with two other suspects, as investigations intensify into the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo.

Police confirmed that Akofena, known privately as Israel Kwadwo Safo, reported himself to the Regional Police Headquarters on Monday and was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to assist with ongoing investigations.

The arrest comes barely a day after six private security guards were detained in connection with the incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 21, at a residence in Kwabenya during Akofena's installation ceremony as successor to the late Apostle Professor Emeritus Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

According to police, further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects identified as Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson. The three suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear before court.

In a significant development, police said a search conducted at Akofena's residence and vehicle uncovered a cache of firearms and ammunition.

The items retrieved reportedly include 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition, loaded magazines and two Glock pistols, one of which is registered in Akofena's name.

The latest arrests mark a major escalation in the investigation into Sunday's shooting, which left Sarah Adwoa Safo injured and triggered widespread public concern.

Police have yet to publicly indicate the specific offences being investigated or whether charges have been preferred against any of the suspects.

The shooting incident occurred amid a bitter succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, in September 2025.

The succession process has generated legal challenges and competing claims over the leadership of the church, with tensions heightened by Akofena's installation despite an ongoing court dispute.

Meanwhile, conflicting accounts continue to emerge regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting.

While relatives of Sarah Adwoa Safo have alleged that she was attacked while attempting to serve a court injunction linked to the installation ceremony, representatives of the Kristo Asafo Mission insist security personnel only fired warning shots and deny that she was deliberately targeted.

Police have not publicly endorsed either version of events and say investigations are continuing to establish the full facts.

The outcome of the probe is expected to be closely watched, not only because of the high-profile personalities involved, but also due to its connection to the ongoing leadership dispute within one of Ghana's most influential religious organisations.

Authorities have assured the public that all persons found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
