The Government of Ghana has announced that 300 Ghanaian teachers will be deployed to The Bahamas in 2026 under an expanded labour mobility partnership aimed at strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following bilateral talks with Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Edward Davis during the Bahamas' 53rd Independence Anniversary celebrations, where he represented President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the recruitment of the teachers marks the first phase of a broader education partnership between Ghana and The Bahamas. He noted that the initiative builds on the success of an existing labour mobility arrangement under which Ghanaian nurses are already serving in the Caribbean nation.

"It gives us much pride to highlight that Bahamian authorities are deeply impressed with the excellent work ethic of Ghanaian nurses serving under a similar agreement," the Foreign Affairs Minister said, adding that the teachers' deployment would usher in a new era of cooperation beyond the health sector.

The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two countries in October 2025 to establish a teacher recruitment programme. The agreement was conceived as a pilot project, with the potential to expand cooperation into commerce, tourism, culture and broader human capital development.

Mr. Ablakwa also highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Ghana and The Bahamas, noting that many Bahamians trace their ancestry to Ghana. He said the Mahama administration would continue pursuing diplomacy that delivers direct economic and employment opportunities for Ghanaians.

The deployment of the 300 teachers is expected to create new employment opportunities for qualified Ghanaian educators while helping to address teacher shortages in The Bahamas, further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
