Freight Train Service Set to Ease Container Congestion at Tema Port
TEMA, Ghana | July 4, 2026 Ghana is preparing to introduce a freight rail service that will transport shipping containers directly from the Port of Tema to inland warehouses and logistics hubs in a move aimed at reducing road congestion and improving cargo movement.

The initiative, being pursued by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in collaboration with railway and port operators, is expected to reduce the number of heavy-duty trucks on roads leading to and from the Tema Port while speeding up the evacuation of imported containers.

Officials say the rail system will enhance efficiency in the country's supply chain, lower transportation costs for businesses, improve road safety and reduce pressure on major highways frequently used by container trucks.

The development complements the recent expansion of Tema Port, where new cargo-handling equipment and infrastructure have been installed to increase container capacity and strengthen Ghana's position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

Authorities are expected to announce operational timelines once testing and the necessary logistics arrangements are completed.
