<p>The Ministry of Education has announced the immediate suspension of all Senior High School (SHS) graduation ceremonies nationwide as part of efforts to curb what it describes as excessive displays of wealth and flamboyance during school events.</p><p>The directive, issued by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, will remain in force pending a review of the guidelines governing graduation ceremonies in second-cycle institutions.</p><p>In a statement released on June 20, the Ministry said it had taken note of increasing public concern over the growing trend of extravagant celebrations at some SHSs, where students have been presented with luxury cars, money bouquets and other expensive gifts on school campuses.</p><p>According to the Ministry, educational institutions are intended to promote learning, discipline, character development and responsible citizenship, and graduation ceremonies should reflect those values rather than serve as platforms for ostentatious displays.</p><p>Officials stressed that graduation events are meant to celebrate academic achievement and personal growth and should therefore be conducted with dignity, modesty and respect for the educational environment.</p><p>The Ministry further condemned any conduct by students, parents, guardians or other stakeholders that shifts attention away from the true purpose of school ceremonies.</p><p>In line with the directive, the Ghana Education Service has also moved to prohibit extravagant post-examination celebrations on school premises. The ban covers the presentation of luxury vehicles, money bouquets and similar displays that education authorities believe create unhealthy competition among students and contribute to social divisions within schools.</p><p>School heads have been warned that they could face sanctions if such activities are permitted on their campuses.</p><p>The Ministry explained that the suspension of graduation ceremonies is intended to provide an opportunity for a comprehensive review of existing regulations to ensure that school events align with the core values and objectives of Ghana's education system.</p><p>Authorities say the measures form part of broader efforts to strengthen discipline, responsibility and moral development among students while preserving the integrity of educational institutions across the country.</p><p>The Ministry has assured stakeholders that revised guidelines will be communicated once the review process is completed.</p><p>Photo credit: Myjoyonline.com</p>
