Couple Arrested After Climbing Empire State Building, Displaying Peace Banner and Getting Engaged
NEW YORK CITY, USA | July 2, 2026: Two thrill-seeking climbers have been arrested after scaling the antenna of New York City's iconic Empire State Building, where they displayed a peace banner and became engaged in a dramatic stunt.

The couple, identified by police as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus (Ivan Kuznetsov), climbed more than 1,450 feet above Manhattan without safety equipment before unfurling a banner that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."

After spending several minutes atop the spire, Beerkus got down on one knee and proposed to Nikolau on a lower platform of the structure. She accepted the proposal before the pair descended and were met by officers from the NYPD Emergency Services Unit.

Authorities said the couple allegedly accessed a restricted maintenance area to reach the antenna. They were arrested without incident and charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and other offences. Building officials confirmed the stunt did not pose any danger to visitors or tenants, though it prompted a temporary security response and evacuation of parts of the observation deck.
