Churches Are Critical Development Partners, Not Just Places of Worship – Bawumia
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for stronger collaboration between government, religious institutions, and development stakeholders, emphasizing that churches play a vital role in Ghana's socio-economic transformation beyond their spiritual mandate.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana on Thursday, June 11, Dr. Bawumia noted that churches have historically contributed significantly to the country's development, particularly in education, healthcare, and community welfare.

According to him, the extensive reach and influence of churches across Ghana position them as indispensable partners in efforts to address national challenges and promote sustainable development.

"Churches are not merely places of worship; they are important development partners whose contributions continue to shape the nation's progress," Dr. Bawumia stated.

The meeting focused on issues of national development, education, social cohesion, and the role of faith-based organizations in fostering peace and unity within the country.

Dr. Bawumia paid particular tribute to mission schools, describing them as foundational institutions that have produced many of Ghana's distinguished leaders, professionals, and public servants over the decades. He observed that the educational legacy of churches remains one of the most significant contributions to Ghana's human resource development.

However, he expressed concern about what he described as a gradual decline in standards in some mission schools, attributing the situation partly to changes in management arrangements over the years. He stressed the need for renewed collaboration between educational authorities and religious bodies to preserve the values and standards that made mission schools exemplary institutions.

The former Vice President further emphasized the importance of maintaining strong partnerships between state institutions and faith-based organizations in addressing social challenges, promoting moral values, and strengthening national unity.

Leaders of the Christian Council of Ghana welcomed the engagement and reaffirmed the Council's commitment to contributing to national development through advocacy, education, peacebuilding, and social interventions.

The meeting forms part of broader consultations between national stakeholders and religious leaders on strategies to promote inclusive development and strengthen social cohesion across the country.
