Ablakwa Pledges to Secure Compensation/Reparations for Ghanaian Victims of South Africa Xenophobic Attacks

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has pledged to pursue compensation and reparations for Ghanaians who suffered losses during recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

<p>The minister made the commitment while receiving a batch of evacuated Ghanaian nationals who returned home following weeks of violence and intimidation targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.</p><p>Mr. Ablakwa said the Government of Ghana, under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, is undertaking legal and diplomatic efforts to ensure affected citizens receive justice for properties, businesses, and investments lost as a result of the attacks.</p><p>According to him, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has commenced a documentation exercise to gather evidence of losses incurred by victims. He urged returnees to provide relevant records and ownership documents to support the compensation process.</p><p>The minister emphasized that many of the affected Ghanaians had invested significant resources and spent years building livelihoods in South Africa, making it imperative for government to seek redress on their behalf.</p><p>He further disclosed that President Mahama intends to raise the matter at the African Union level as part of broader efforts to secure accountability and protect the rights of African migrants across the continent.</p><p>In addition to pursuing compensation, government has announced a support package for evacuees, including financial assistance, transportation support, reintegration allowances, psychological counselling, and access to employment and business opportunities.</p><p>The pledge comes amid renewed concerns over recurring xenophobic violence in South Africa, which has forced hundreds of Ghanaians and other foreign nationals to abandon their homes and businesses in search of safety.</p><p><br></p><p>Photo credit: Ghana News Agency<br></p>
