The team earned qualification after winning the 2025 Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) held in South Africa in December 2025, securing an opportunity to compete against university debaters from around the world.
The World Universities Debate Championship is regarded as the world's largest university debating and public-speaking competition. The upcoming championship is scheduled to run from December 27, 2026, to January 4, 2027, in Ottawa.
Preparations by the University of Ghana team are already underway, with training focused on argument development, critical thinking, research, public speaking and rebuttal techniques. The team is also being prepared to address complex contemporary issues expected to feature in the competition.
The Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana, Dr Austin Luguterah, said the university was working closely with the team to ensure that its members were adequately prepared for the international contest.
He said the team would not only be representing the University of Ghana but would also be carrying Ghana's hopes and aspirations to Canada.
The qualification adds to the University of Ghana Debate Society's established record on the international debating stage. The Society has represented the university at the WUDC on several occasions and has previously achieved notable results, including reaching the finals of the world championship in 2022.
The university is encouraging its alumni, partners and the wider Ghanaian public to support the team as preparations continue ahead of the championship in Canada.
The team's participation is expected to provide another opportunity for Ghanaian students to showcase their debating, research and public-speaking abilities on the global stage.
