The Danish-Spanish tactician is the latest name linked to the high-profile role, which became vacant after Ghana parted ways with Queiroz on October 1 following a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Christiansen’s reported application adds to the growing list of coaches associated with the position as football authorities seek a suitable candidate to rebuild the Black Stars and improve the team’s performances in upcoming international competitions.
Neither the GFA nor the Panamanian football federation had publicly confirmed the reported application at the time of publication.
Christiansen’s Experience in International Football
Christiansen has experience in both club and international football. Before taking charge of Panama, he managed several European clubs, including Leeds United in England’s Championship, APOEL Nicosia and AEK Larnaca in Cyprus, and Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.
His experience with Panama has also placed him in the international spotlight, having led the Central American side through World Cup qualifying and into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana faced Panama during the tournament, with the Black Stars recording a 1-0 victory. That encounter gave Christiansen first-hand experience of Ghana’s playing style and the quality of the national team’s squad.
His background in international management could be an advantage if his reported interest develops into a formal consideration by Ghana’s football authorities.
GFA Begins Search for Queiroz’s Successor
The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have established a five-member technical search committee to identify and recommend a new head coach for the senior national team.
The committee is chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe and includes former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, ex-international Anthony Baffoe, football administrator Agbesi Dzakpasu and high-performance specialist Faisal Chibsah.
The committee has been tasked with assessing potential candidates and submitting its recommendations to the GFA for consideration.
The search follows Ghana’s poor opening to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, which included defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia. The results prompted the departure of Queiroz and intensified calls for changes to the team’s technical direction.
Pressure to Restore Black Stars’ Fortunes
Whoever is appointed will face the challenge of restoring confidence in the Black Stars and preparing the team for its upcoming competitive fixtures.
Ghanaian supporters will expect the next coach to improve results, build a consistent playing identity and make effective use of the country’s available talent.
For now, Christiansen’s reported application remains unconfirmed by the football authorities. The final decision will depend on the GFA’s recruitment process and the committee’s assessment of the candidates under consideration.
