The 34-year-old entertainer shared the revelation in a video posted to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, October 18, as she addressed public speculation about changes in her speaking voice over the years.
“I vaped nicotine a lot,” Gomez admitted, explaining that she had come to associate the habit with the change in her voice.
“Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it,” she said.
She added that vaping had changed her voice and described the habit as a mistake. Despite her concerns, Gomez used humour to address listeners who might dislike the change, saying they could simply stop listening to her.
Gomez Says She Has Stopped Vaping
Gomez also disclosed that she had stopped vaping and was hopeful she could maintain her progress.
She acknowledged that overcoming nicotine dependence had been difficult but encouraged people facing similar struggles to remain hopeful.
“I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up,” she said, adding that people dealing with difficult habits could overcome them.
Her comments offer a personal account of her experience with nicotine use and a warning to fans who may be considering vaping.
Earlier Questions About Her Voice
The singer’s latest remarks follow months of public discussion about changes in her voice.
During an Instagram Live session in December 2025, Gomez addressed questions from fans about the subject, saying that her throat sometimes swelled internally.
At the time, she did not directly attribute the changes to vaping. Her latest video provides a new explanation based on her own experience, although it does not establish that vaping is the sole medical cause of the changes.
Gomez has previously spoken publicly about living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition. However, she did not identify lupus as the cause of her vocal changes in the latest video.
Health Concerns Associated With Vaping
Vaping is often marketed as an alternative to conventional cigarettes, but nicotine-containing products can cause dependence, and inhaling aerosol may irritate the respiratory system.
Exposure to irritants can affect the throat and vocal folds, potentially contributing to dryness, inflammation, hoarseness or changes in voice quality. Research into the long-term effects of vaping on the voice is still developing, and individual outcomes can vary.
Gomez’s disclosure has renewed attention on the potential consequences of nicotine use, particularly among young people who may view vaping as relatively harmless.
Her message is straightforward: nicotine can be difficult to quit, and people who have not started vaping should think carefully before taking up the habit.
