Sam George Raises Concern Over Ghana’s Growing Number Of Radio Stations

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has previously raised concerns about what he considers an excessive number of radio stations operating in Ghana.

During an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View programme in April 2025, Mr George criticised the allocation of more than 600 radio frequency authorisations, describing the situation as excessive and harmful to the growth of the broadcasting industry.

He argued that many stations were not producing original content but instead relied heavily on syndicated political discussions and repeated news bulletins.

The Minister suggested that Ghana could operate with fewer than 100 radio stations if the allocation of frequencies were properly rationalised. He also proposed introducing performance benchmarks to ensure that broadcasters make effective use of their authorisations.

Although the remarks support the broader claim that Mr George believes Ghana has too many broadcasting outlets, the specific statement that having too many media houses is “absurd” has not been independently verified.

His comments have renewed discussions about the size, sustainability and regulation of Ghana’s media landscape, as well as the need to balance industry reforms with media freedom.
