Minister for Communication,Digital Technology and Innovations ,Samuel Nartey George has raised concerns over the growing number of radio and television stations in Ghana, questioning the need for nearly 700 radio stations and 120 television stations operating across the country.
He described the situation as “media tyranny” and expressed concern about the use of business entities by some religious organizations to acquire broadcast licenses
According to him, political and religious organizations operating media houses for their affiliated interests should be subjected to stricter scrutiny, arguing that some of these stations contribute to the challenges facing Ghana’s broadcasting industry.
The Minister also explained why an earlier plan to shut down 64 media houses was halted following an intervention by the President.
His comments have renewed discussions about media regulation, ownership and the need to ensure responsible broadcasting in Ghana.
