Speaking to the media on Friday, October 2, the MP said she had engaged relevant authorities ahead of the exercise and was assured that structures around Labadi Beach Hotel would not be demolished.
She said she was therefore surprised to find military personnel carrying out demolitions in the area without, according to her, adequate communication to her office.
“I went to where I had to go to, the authorities, and they assured me that Labadi Beach would not be demolished,” she said.
According to the MP, she was subsequently informed that some of the structures being targeted were on land belonging to Labadi Beach Hotel. She questioned the rationale for the operation and asked, “What has La done?”
Naa Odoley also expressed concern about the presence of armed military personnel at the site, alleging that shots were being fired while people remained in the area.
The demolition forms part of broader government efforts to clear structures considered to be obstructing waterways and contributing to flooding in parts of Greater Accra. Earlier demolitions at nearby Laboma Beach targeted structures located within the buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon.
The Ghana Armed Forces has maintained that the Laboma operation was a targeted exercise aimed at restoring the natural flow of the lagoon. The 48 Engineer Regiment has also said affected occupants were given prior notice to vacate the area.
The latest confrontation has brought renewed attention to the government's flood-mitigation demolition programme and concerns over the specific properties being targeted along the La coastline.
