<h1><br></h1><p>The development, which will provide about 2,030 parking bays, will also feature two hotels with a combined capacity of 370 rooms. President Mahama performed the sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The project will consist of a 15-storey building, including two basement levels. According to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), the complex will contain parking facilities, a shopping mall, food court, retail outlets and office spaces. It will also feature a sky lounge, an observatory overlooking aircraft operations and an 80-metre pedestrian sky bridge connecting the development directly to Terminal 3.</p><p>The hotel component will comprise a 120-room five-star hotel and a 250-room three-star hotel, offering accommodation options for different categories of travellers and visitors to the airport. President Mahama said the project, together with other ongoing airport infrastructure developments, was being financed from the internally generated resources of GACL and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). He stressed that the central government had not provided direct budgetary funding for the projects.</p><p>“The government of Ghana has not given any of the two institutions one single cedi for these projects,” the President said, urging the two institutions to continue leveraging their own resources to improve aviation infrastructure.</p><p>The Managing Director of GACL, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, said the project would create additional sources of non-aeronautical revenue for the company through parking, retail, dining and hotel operations. She explained that the facility was being developed on the landside of the airport and would therefore be accessible to the general public.</p><p>The development comes amid rising passenger traffic at the Accra International Airport. President Mahama said passenger numbers increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, creating additional pressure on existing infrastructure. GACL had earlier announced the closure of the existing Terminal 3 car park to make way for construction of the new facility. A temporary annex with capacity for more than 600 vehicles was provided to accommodate airport users during the construction period.</p><p>The new complex is expected to be completed within 24 months.</p><p>The airport development forms part of a broader programme to modernise Ghana's aviation infrastructure. Other projects include the interconnecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3, the repurposing of Terminal 2, runway expansion and upgrades to air navigation and surveillance systems.
