<h1><br></h1><p>Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, announced the government's position on Thursday, explaining that the proposal seeks to enhance governance by providing elected governments with a longer period to implement their policy agenda while maintaining the constitutional two-term limit for presidents.</p><p>The government, however, emphasized that the proposed amendment will not apply to the incumbent President, dispelling concerns that the recommendation is intended to extend the current administration's tenure.</p><p>The proposal forms part of the government's response to recommendations submitted by the Constitution Review Committee. Other accepted recommendations include reducing the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35 years, abolishing the death penalty, and introducing additional governance reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana's constitutional framework.</p><p>Despite the government's acceptance of the recommendation, the presidential term has not yet been extended. The proposal must undergo the constitutional amendment process before it can take effect. Depending on the constitutional provisions affected, this process could require parliamentary approval and, where necessary, a national referendum.</p><p>The recommendation has already generated public debate, with supporters arguing that a five-year term would provide governments with sufficient time to implement long-term development policies, while critics are expected to scrutinize its implications for democratic accountability and electoral oversight.</p><p>The Constitution Review Committee was established to assess Ghana's 1992 Constitution and recommend reforms intended to improve governance, accountability, and the effectiveness of democratic institutions.</p>
