He identified depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders as the most common mental health conditions in Ghana, noting that cultural beliefs often attribute these conditions to spiritual causes rather than medical issues”.

According to him, mental health services in Ghana remain inadequate, especially in rural areas where access to professionals and facilities is limited. He recommended training community health workers, integrating mental health into primary healthcare, and expanding telehealth services to improve access.

Addressing the role of traditional healers and spiritual leaders, Samuel stressed the need for “collaboration through education and referrals. He noted that many Ghanaians first seek help from traditional healers, making it essential to bridge the gap between traditional and modern healthcare systems”.

On reducing stigma, he highlighted ongoing mental health authority campaigns and the role of non -profit organizations in promoting awareness. He called for “increased government investment, integration of mental health education in schools, and media campaigns to educate the public”.

He also emphasized the role of technology in improving mental health care, suggesting the use of “online therapy, remote counseling, and mental health apps to reach underserved populations”.

The recent World Health Organization (WHO) report on mental health in Ghana is a wake-up call for the nation to take swift action. It connects nations, partners and people to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable. According to the report, nearly 2.4 million Ghanaians may be grappling with various degrees of mental illness. Additionally, individuals suffering from mental illnesses are frequently stigmatized, perceived as difficult, or unfairly associated with anger or even spiritual problems.

According to the mental health authority 2023 annual reporting, it indicated that the top ten causes of psychiatric outpatient department (OPD) attendance from 2021 to 2023 in Ghana., Schizophrenia, schizotypal, and delusional disorders had the highest number of diagnoses, with a total of 26,401 cases in 2023, an increase from 24,790 cases recorded in 2022.The report also indicated that, most females are faced with mental health issues in Ghana as compared to the males. The causes of psychiatric OPD attendance from 2021 to 2023 undictated that, among the ten disease conditions, schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders were the highest among males and females. Moreover, the report shows that ten different disease conditions contribute to mental health awareness in Ghana where females are in high rank.

According to Prof.Pinaman Appau, CEO of the Mental Health Authority emphasized the need for extended awareness beyond the traditional World Mental Health Day observed on October t 10th. “A single day is not enough to address the complex issues surrounding mental health. By expanding our focus to the entire month, we can make a more substantial impact. Mental health awareness is always portrayed during the month of May in every year. This projects the awareness of the issue and it contribute to bringing individuals who are affected by such conditions to ableaim foster dialogue, encourage proactive approaches to mental health and ensure early intention. The colour purple has been the emblematic colour of the Mental Health Authority since its inception. It symbolizes a blend of the calming stability of blue with vibrant energy of red. This colour choice reflects the authority’s commitment to providing hope and support to those affected by mental health conditions. Purple stands for dignity, peace and independence all which are crucial in the context of mental health. She explained that, mental health awareness is crucial for the holistic well -being of individuals across various dimensions of life. Unfortunately, stigma and lack of understanding often prevent people from seeking necessary help, leaving them isolated and reducing their life quality and productivity”.

The objectives of these activities were to raise awareness, educate the public about mental health, promote human rights, change perceptions, reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking behaviors, and enhance community support for individuals with mental disorders and their caregivers.

Mental health remains a critical issue in Ghana, with a treatment gap estimated between 95% and 98%, despite ongoing awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and improving access to care. Mental health care in the country primarily relies on counseling and medication, with efforts to integrate mental health education into the training curriculum for health workers to address the shortage of professionals. However, misconceptions about mental health persist, leading many individuals to suffer in silence without seeking treatment.

Experts emphasize that psychological therapies and medications can effectively support those struggling with mental health conditions. Additionally, alternative support options such as counseling, peer support, and community-based interventions continue to play a crucial role in mental health care.

While awareness campaigns have helped shift public perceptions, challenges in accessibility remain a major obstacle, highlighting the need for increased investment and policy reforms to bridge the treatment gap.

According to survival, Mercy Acquah, she mentioned that,“looking back on my experience with mental health, I recall feeling isolated and alone as the worst. However, I was supported by talking to loved ones, professional help, and taking care of myself. Initially, I felt ashamed and embarrassed regarding my mental health, but I managed to beat those feelings by being supported by my friends, family and loved ones, and booking for therapies. My advice to others, particularly women with the same problems, is to take care of themselves, seek help when needed, and realize that you're not alone. Your mental well-being matters, and it takes strength to get help, not weakness”.

Speaking during an interview, an active social media user was worried that there is not enough discussion of mental health on platforms like Instagram. "I don't really see posts of such often," the user replied. The user further stated that social and cultural norms are also capable of negatively influencing how mental health is discussed on social media. "These norms lead people to treat individuals in this condition poorly, which sometimes translates to rejection by family, friends, and loved ones."

But the user appreciated the impact of Mental Health Awareness Month on social media. "This month generates helpful awareness, which makes people aware and also makes the people in such a condition feel they have a good family or community they belong to. “To promote more accurate and affirming views about mental health, the user proposed daily posts, podcasts, and videos by health practitioners. This would remind people continuously about the right facts regarding mental health in Ghana," the user elaborated.

In an interview with a mental health advocate, she stated that,“mental health is a critical part of overall well-being, enabling individuals to cope with the pressures of life, realize their potential, and make a contribution to society. In Ghana, efforts are being made to treat mental illnesses with counseling and medication. The programs are being integrated into health worker curriculum in order to manage the shortage of trained providers”.

She commented that, “awareness is an ongoing effort to de-stigmatize mental illness and bring about understanding. Personal experience comes into play when doing this. Misconceptions regarding mental health, however, make individuals suffer in silence and thus end up with untreated sicknesses. Most of the mentally disordered individuals in Ghana are not treated according to recent data due to accessibility challenges”.

She added that, “I face numerous challenges when caring for patients with mental health conditions, including communication barriers, emotional demands, stigma and bias, complexity of care, safety concerns, limited resources, and cultural and social factors that impact care. I recall a situation where a patient with a mental health condition attempted to punch my nose, which resulted in bleeding”. This experience highlighted the safety concerns and potential risks that nurses face when caring for patients with mental health conditions.

She revealed that, “health experts explain mental health awareness as paramount in growing, understanding and promoting access to health care. Psychological therapies, drugs, counseling, peer support, and community support are some of the measures available to treat those suffering from mental illness. The Ghanaian government and health agencies are faced with the challenge of speeding up efforts for mental health awareness, stigma reduction, and increasing access to healthcare services. Through this, individuals can receive the care they require in managing their mental health disorders and lead productive lives”.

Education remains a key factor in mental health awareness and calls for a collective effort from the government, health professionals, and communities to improve mental health services in Ghana. While awareness campaigns have helped shift public perceptions, challenges in accessibility remain a major obstacle, high lightening the need for increased investment and policy reforms to bridge the gaps.
