Musk made the announcement in a post on his social media platform, X, on Monday, October 19, saying the initiative would be the first of several planned distributions.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” he wrote, adding that it would be “the first of many.”
The announcement has attracted attention because of the potential scale of the proposed distribution. The United States has approximately 73 million children under the age of 18. Based on SpaceX shares trading at about $146 each at the end of the previous trading week, distributing one share to each child would represent an estimated value of more than $10.5 billion.
However, Musk has yet to provide details on how the initiative would be implemented, who would qualify or when the shares would be transferred.
Musk Calls for Shares to Be Distributed Directly to the Public
The announcement followed a proposal by artificial intelligence company Anthropic to commit five per cent of its shares to a new public benefit fund intended to support charitable initiatives and other public-interest projects.
Responding to Anthropic’s announcement, Musk argued that company shares should be distributed directly to members of the public rather than channelled primarily through a charitable fund.
He subsequently announced his intention to distribute SpaceX shares to American children, although he did not provide a detailed implementation plan.
The proposed giveaway aligns with Musk’s broader argument that advances in artificial intelligence and technology could generate significant economic prosperity, potentially allowing wealth and financial benefits to be shared more widely.
Questions Remain Over Eligibility and Distribution
Despite the announcement, several practical questions remain unanswered.
Musk has not specified whether the offer would cover all children living in the United States, only American citizens or a narrower group of eligible minors. He has also not explained how recipients would be identified, how the shares would be transferred or whether parents and guardians would need to establish investment accounts on behalf of children.
One possible avenue discussed in media coverage is the use of investment accounts established for children under the Trump administration’s Trump Accounts initiative. However, Musk has not publicly confirmed a final distribution mechanism.
The proposed transfer would also require arrangements to address the legal and administrative challenges associated with distributing company shares to millions of recipients.
A Potentially Significant Financial Gift
If implemented as announced, the initiative would represent a substantial transfer of financial assets to American children and could give millions of young people a direct stake in SpaceX.
The ultimate value of the gift would depend on the share price when the distribution takes place, the number of eligible recipients and the final terms of the programme.
For now, the announcement remains a pledge rather than a completed transaction. Further details from Musk or SpaceX will be needed to establish how the proposal will work and when eligible children could receive their shares.
