<h1><br></h1><p>The decision brings an end to weeks of uncertainty over the 73-year-old coach’s future following the expiration of his initial short-term contract after Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.</p><p>In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the GFA said it had reached an agreement with Queiroz for a new coaching mandate covering the next phase of the Black Stars’ programme. The new mandate will begin with the upcoming international window.</p><p>“Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window,” the GFA said.</p><p>The association explained that Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the recently concluded World Cup, had ended several weeks earlier.</p><p>The GFA said the decision to retain the experienced Portuguese tactician was influenced by his extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars.</p><p>Queiroz was appointed in April 2026 to replace Otto Addo on a four-month contract specifically covering the period around the World Cup. Despite having limited preparation time, he guided Ghana to the knockout phase of the tournament.</p><p>Ghana opened its World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama before drawing 0-0 with England and losing 2-1 to Croatia. The results were enough for the Black Stars to advance to the Round of 32, where they were eliminated after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.</p><p>Queiroz subsequently appeared to step down after the World Cup, creating uncertainty over whether he would return to the technical bench. However, the GFA later indicated that its Executive Council had unanimously recommended that he remain in charge.</p><p>Negotiations over a fresh agreement were complicated by reported outstanding payments to Queiroz and members of his technical team relating to their World Cup assignments. Those financial issues were reportedly settled with support from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, helping clear a major obstacle to the negotiations.</p><p>The new mandate means Queiroz will now oversee Ghana’s next major assignment as the Black Stars begin preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.</p><p>Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia. The Black Stars are scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire away on September 24 before hosting The Gambia three days later in Accra.</p><p>The GFA said further details concerning Queiroz’s new mandate and the Black Stars’ upcoming programme would be communicated in due course.</p><p>The Portuguese coach will therefore have the opportunity to build on his World Cup experience as Ghana seek to restore their standing on the continent and return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the previous edition.</p>
