The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has reportedly paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 Ghana Education Service (GES) teachers, following concerns over delays in placing promoted teachers on their appropriate salary scales.

According to a report published by MyNewsGH on Friday, October 16, a total of 49,725 teachers received their payments on Thursday, October 15, alongside their October salaries, while another 6,278 teachers were paid in September.

The payments cover salary adjustments and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026, for teachers whose records met the required payroll validation standards.

The reported development follows government commitments to resolve outstanding promotion-related payment issues affecting teachers. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu had earlier assured teacher unions that the government would work to settle eligible arrears, with October 16 set as a key deadline for the initial phase of payments.

The payment delays had been among the concerns raised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG). The unions embarked on industrial action in September over promotion delays, conditions of service and allowances, among other issues, before suspending the strike after engagements with the government.

CAGD had previously explained that processing promotion-related payments required GES to submit the relevant promotion letters and duly completed promotion or change-of-grade input forms for validation.

The latest reported payments represent a significant step towards addressing teachers’ concerns over delayed salary adjustments. However, the department’s reported position is that cases with incomplete or inaccurate documentation may require further corrections before payment can be made.

Eligible teachers whose payments remain outstanding are therefore expected to ensure that their promotion records and supporting documents are properly submitted through the relevant GES administrative channels.

The government has maintained its commitment to resolving outstanding promotion arrears, while discussions with teacher unions on other concerns, including conditions of service and deprived-area allowances, are expected to continue.
