Air Uganda is expected to commence operations to Ghana in October 2026, while Etihad Airways is scheduled to begin its services in March 2027, according to the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Afriyie Opare.

Ms Opare disclosed the development during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a new multi-purpose car park and airport hotels complex at the Accra International Airport. She said the arrival of the two airlines reflects the continued growth of operations at the country's main international gateway and would provide passengers with additional travel options.

“In October this year [2026], we’ll be welcoming Air Uganda and in March of next year [2027], we’ll be welcoming Etihad Airways,” she said.

The planned entry of Etihad Airways is particularly significant for Ghana's connectivity with the Middle East and beyond. Etihad has already announced plans for a direct Abu Dhabi–Accra service and has established a strategic partnership with Ghana-based Africa World Airlines (AWA).

The partnership covers passenger codeshare and interline arrangements, cargo cooperation and frequent-flyer programmes. Once implemented, it is expected to allow passengers to connect through Accra and Abu Dhabi to destinations across the two airlines' networks.

The new services are expected to support Ghana's tourism, trade and investment sectors by improving connections between Accra and international markets.

GACL says the expansion of airline operations also underscores the need for continued investment in airport infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger numbers and improve the overall travel experience.

The new airport complex being developed at Accra International Airport is intended to contribute to that effort. It will provide additional parking facilities and hotel accommodation for passengers, airline crews and other airport users. The project is part of broader efforts to modernise the airport and strengthen its capacity as Ghana's principal international aviation hub.

For travellers, the arrival of Air Uganda will provide additional connectivity between Ghana and Uganda, while Etihad's planned service will create a direct link between Accra and Abu Dhabi. The two developments are therefore expected to broaden Ghana's aviation network and create new opportunities for passengers and businesses.

Photo credit: Yvonne Afiriyie Opare, Citinews.
